Application-centric refers to an IT architectural strategy prioritizing the value of applications. It allows applications to collaborate and to exchange information via agreed-upon exchange formats and APIs. Interoperability amongst collaborating applications is achieved by converting the exchanged data into those agreed formats. Application-centric is still the preferred approach in the life sciences and healthcare IT, given the large installed foundation of legacy solutions and heterogeneous groups of stakeholders. Since the life cycle of many applications is significantly shorter than the life cycle of their data, this situation poses a huge challenge for long-term application-centric strategies.
